Why Do High-speed Spindle Bearings Fail? How Should Bearing Failure Be Handled?

High-speed spindle bearings are essential components in high-speed machinery such as machine tools and textile equipment; they not only effectively support spindle operation but also play a crucial role in enhancing equipment precision and stability. Consequently, any failure of these bearings disrupts normal equipment operation, necessitating a diagnosis and resolution of the underlying cause. What, then, are the causes of such failures?

Why do high-speed spindle bearings fail?

1. Service life limitations

Even under ideal operating conditions, high-speed spindle bearings have a finite service life. Prolonged use leads to the gradual accumulation of material fatigue damage-manifesting as raceway spalling or rolling element wear-which impairs smooth operation and can ultimately result in total failure.

2. Improper installation

Incorrect positioning or improper preload settings during the installation of high-speed spindle bearings lead to uneven internal load distribution and excessive localized friction, causing wear-related failure of the raceways and rolling elements. Data indicates that if the installation tilt exceeds 0.002 mm/m, the localized load on the raceway increases by 300%, significantly exacerbating the risk of failure.

3. Lubrication failure

High-speed spindle bearings have stringent lubrication requirements. Inadequate lubrication prevents the formation of a lubricating film on contact surfaces, leading to a sharp increase in friction and heat generation. This results in abnormal wear of the rolling elements and raceways, and can even cause deformation, surface peeling, or total failure.

4. Contamination by foreign matter

Impurities from the machining environment-such as dust, metal chips, and coolant-can penetrate the bearing. This disrupts the lubricating film and increases friction and wear. Over time, this damages the rolling elements and raceways, generating noise and vibration, and leading to pitting, spalling, or even bearing seizure.

5. Overload and impact loads

Frequent operation under overload conditions causes the spindle bearings to endure excessive stress over extended periods. When contact stress exceeds the material's yield limit, plastic deformation occurs, ultimately resulting in damage and failure. Additionally, sudden shock loads during operation pose a challenge to machine tool bearings; for instance, CNC machine tool spindle bearings can fail due to cage breakage caused by instantaneous overloads.

How should high-speed spindle bearing failure be handled?

1. If a high-speed spindle bearing exhibits abnormal noise, overheating, or unusual vibration, the machine should be stopped immediately for inspection. Once a bearing issue is confirmed, remove the bearing to inspect the rolling elements, raceways, and cage for wear and the presence of contaminants; then, assess the damage to determine whether a replacement is necessary.

2. Faults such as spalling, corrosion, or breakage are considered serious failures, and replacing the bearing is recommended. When selecting a replacement, one must consider the equipment's actual operating conditions and choose a high-quality bearing with the appropriate speed rating to ensure efficient operation.

3. After replacing the bearing, take measures based on the identified cause of failure-such as optimizing operating parameters, ensuring correct installation, and scheduling regular lubricant checks and changes-to prevent the same issue from causing bearing failure again.

High-speed spindle bearing failure is a common issue during equipment operation. When it occurs, simply replacing the bearing is insufficient; one must also carefully analyze the root cause and implement targeted preventive measures. Otherwise, the new bearing may soon suffer the same failure, which is highly detrimental to the manufacturer.
