Hybrid ceramic ball bearings typically refer to a bearing structure in which the rolling elements are made of ceramic material, while the rings (inner and outer) remain metallic. A typical configuration involves rings made of bearing steel (such as GCr15) or stainless steel (such as 9Cr18 or 440C), paired with ceramic rolling elements (balls) primarily made of materials like silicon nitride (Si3N4), zirconia (ZrO2), or alumina (Al2O3).

Among these, silicon nitride (Si3N4) is a commonly used material for hybrid bearings due to its superior overall performance. Silicon nitride ceramics are characterized by high hardness, strength, and toughness; low density (approximately 40% that of steel); a low coefficient of thermal expansion; resistance to high temperatures and corrosion; non-magnetic and insulating properties; and self-lubricating capabilities. These attributes allow hybrid bearings utilizing silicon nitride balls to effectively reduce centrifugal forces during high-speed operation, minimize friction and heat generation, and enhance the bearing's limiting speed, rigidity, and service life (which can reach three to five times that of all-steel bearings); they are also suitable for use in specialized environments involving electrical conductivity or strong magnetic fields.

Currently, the mainstream sintering processes for silicon nitride ceramic balls are Hot Isostatic Pressing (HIP) and Gas Pressure Sintering (GPS). The HIP process achieves full material densification, significantly reducing defects and markedly improving mechanical properties, whereas the GPS process enables the production of high-performance components at a lower cost, making it suitable for mass production.
